How To Prepare Your Site For a Shed in 4 Simple Steps:

1. Choose a location

There are a number of factors to consider when thinking about choosing a location for your new shed! Its intended purpose, the look of the structure and your yard, the conditions of the ground, exposure to light and moisture, and local ordinances are all important factors to consider!

The first, and the factor most people forget, is to consider what the purpose of your shed is. If you’re adding a shed to your yard for storage and convenience, you definitely don’t want to put in the back 40! But if you’re adding a shed to your space as a retreat away from the hustle and bustle of life, then putting your shed as far from your house as possible could make sense!

Next, consider the appearance of your shed, home, and yard. All together, you want your space to look as cohesive and as welcoming as possible—you want to spend some time with your new shed, don’t you? Ensure your shed looks like it’s a natural part of your property by considering its placement in your yard and building additions like a pathway from your home to your shed. You probably don’t, for example, want to place your shed in the very center of your yard, no matter how amazing it is.

The most critical factor for shed longevity and functionality is the consideration of the ground conditions. The best location for your shed is a flat, level surface that is free of large rocks or roots. Avoid placing your shed in a low-lying area that currently or could in the future collect water. Additionally, avoiding placing the shed next to trees or branches will protect it from branch scratches. At the same time, avoid placing it in direct sunlight as sun exposure can cause the interior to get hot fast and for the exterior to age faster over time. If you’re purchasing a garden shed, you’ll also want to consider how much light you want to reach your shed and at what time of day you want your shed exposed to the sun.

Legally, there is much to consider when placing a shed in your backyard. In most areas, there will be local laws and ordinances for you to follow when placing and building your shed. If your shed is bigger, you might need a building permit. The setback laws are the most important ordinance you should consider when viewing your area’s building code. These include specific regulations for easements, distance from property lines, flood areas, septic tanks, and more. Be sure to check in with your local building and zoning department to ensure your shed and your desired location are 100% legal in your area.

2. Clear the area

After you’ve chosen a dry, level spot in your yard to place your brand-new shed, you will want to make sure the area is clear of big roots, branches, and piles of leaves, as well as any lawn care supplies or outdoor activity accessories.

3. Choose a Foundation

When choosing a foundation, there are multiple options to consider. Many people opt for a DIY foundation, but this can potentially cause problems for you if done improperly. At Sunrise Structures, we offer two different foundation options for you to choose from:

Option One

  • 4-5 inches of limestone on top of sod or dirt
  • leveled, compacted, and smooth
  • Site Prep Cost: $1,400-$2,500

Option Two—Premium!

  • Wooden framing 4-5 inches deep in sod
  • filled with limestone, compacted, and leveled with grass
  • Site Prep Cost: $1,700-$3,200

Site Prep FAQs

Proper site preparation ensures that your new Cabin, Shed, or Garage is built on a stable and level foundation. This helps prevent shifting, settling, and other issues over time, ensuring your structure remains durable and secure.

Site preparation typically includes clearing the area of debris, leveling the ground, and laying a foundation. This creates a solid base that supports the structure’s weight and ensures a smooth installation process.

Site preparation can only take one day. However, for us to lay a foundation, due to lead times, there’s typically a 2-3-week period before we can start the foundation work. Rest assured, we’ll complete the foundation within a reasonable timeframe before your outdoor structure is delivered. Our “same day, same crew” approach means that the team preparing your foundation will be the same team handling the installation, so the entire process is efficient and doesn’t extend longer than necessary. Once the foundation is complete, your new storage shed is ready for installation!

Yes, we offer site preparation services to make your installation as seamless as possible. Our experienced team ensures the ground is ready, whether you need an old structure removed or just a new foundation laid. View our foundation and site preparation process here.

You can handle site preparation on your own, but it’s crucial to follow our guidelines for leveling and base materials to ensure the best results. If you prefer a hassle-free experience, we’re happy to take care of it for you.

A level site is essential for the stability of your structure. Unleveled locations can cause a shed to shift and break down over time. If your site isn’t level, our team can grade and adjust the area as part of the preparation process to ensure your structure is built on a solid, even surface.
